Total Jobs Expansions/Contractions Births/Deaths Net Migration Contact Us

What drives economic growth in the communities of New York? To answer that question, this website provides a uniquely broad view of job creation trends in the Empire State during the 15 years leading up to the Great Recession that began in late 2007. The data come from the National Establishment Time Series (NETS), which is distilled from Dun and Bradstreet's proprietary national marketing information file. Using NETS data, it is possible to track business births, deaths, contractions, expansions and physical movements -- information not available from conventional government labor statistics.

Employment changes from 1993 through 2008 are tracked here on a statewide and regional basis. The numbers were distilled from records of more than 2 million commercial, not-for-profit and government establishments that were in existence in New York State at any point during this period.
